The 2021 Roswell Galacticon & SciFi Film Fest in its eleventh year is a family friendly event with an emphasis on SciFi and Fantasy themes.  The last Galacticon was held in 2019 and filled the Roswell Convention Center with the largest crowd ever of 3500 people!  Then came the pandemic.  Our planned 2020 Galacticon was forced to cancel when State restrictions prohibited mass gatherings.  Although plans were well underway for the 2021 Con at the Convention Center, it was cancelled when the facility was closed.  

 

It was felt that we simply had to hold an event this year leading to a November 2021 Roswell Galacticon with the theme of “Hope Rises”.  Being held on November 12th – 14th, the main location is at the newly re-opened Clarion Inn & Suites Sally Port Roswell with a couple of side trips to local businesses.  We are thrilled to have the Clarion as our host hotel with their ballroom facility for our Vendor Hall, Gaming tables and film screening and they have set aside a block of rooms for visitors. 

 

The SciFi Film Fest was open to submissions earlier this year and received a record sixty submissions by the end of September.  The film judges have selected thirty films for awards consideration and are currently viewing and choosing the winners to be announced at the Galacticon and at, www.roswellgalacticon.com.  Awards will be given in nine categories and the Audience Favorite.  The winners and selected films will be shown at the Galaxy 8 Theater in Roswell on Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.

 

We are emphasizing gaming this year which has undergone a rebirth during the quarantine with many players discovering and re-discovering the joy of tabletop and role playing board games such as the classic Dungeons & Dragons.  The games are open to all and will cover beginners to advanced players.  Playing is covered with the $5 daily admission.

 

The event will kick-off on Friday night with the traditional Karaoke icebreaker held again at Peppers Grill & Bar at 500 N Main.  It begins at 7 pm with food and beverages are available for purchase. Cosplay highly encouraged – Steampunk, Superhero, gaming, etc. – with Karaoke provided by local personality, John Bitner.

 

The vendors will be set up in the Clarion Ballroom and include arts and crafts, comic books and vintage books, posters, collectibles and much more.  There is an admission charge of $5 for adults with children 11 & under free with an accompanying adult.  This charge will cover the Area 52 and Film Fest events on that day.

 

There will be a fun, family field trip on Saturday evening with an exclusive Area 52 Experience at the new Area 52 Tactical Laser Tag and Virtual Reality business in Roswell.  Attendees will need to register for their Laser Tag as usual though there is a discount and the facility will only be open to Galacticon attendees with their $5 admission for Saturday.  Other activities include gaming and family fun for free and make & take workshops for a minimal fee.  There will be a food truck on the grounds.

 

The Galacticon Committee is looking forward to this Fall Galacticon and invites everyone to come and join in the fun.  Plans are in the works to hold the July 4th Roswell Galacticon in conjunction with the 2022 UFO festivities and a second November edition if feasible.
